Oakland | Date Night: Delicious Sammies at Southie

Sunday, October 22, 2017

I cannot say it enough -- I am so happy that I live in North Oakland. It is still urban living but has many lively neighborhoods with small town feel. The food scene is just phenomenal with farm to table eateries, casual but refined restaurants, little cafes where tables spill out to the sunny sidewalks, wine bars, bakeshops that serve divine pastries, etc. North Oakland is just 20 minutes away from San Francisco if the traffic cooperates. If we want the City experience we just drive across the bridge. However, given North Oakland has so much offer in the culinary department including San Francisco restaurants that either moved to Oakland or created an extension of their business in this city, Mr Sweetie and I stick to Oakland for date nights. We also want to support our neighborhood businesses as well.

Southie is one of those amazing places to eat at on a beautiful sunny afternoon. Located on the border between Oakland and Berkeley in the chic Rockridge neighborhood, we live just minutes away from this place. Southie is described as  " small, lively restaurant serving terrific sandwiches by day and a delicious dinner by night".

Mr Sweetie and I had a really nice date night here after a morning of shopping at Home Depot. He was Mr Fix It who braved the steep roof to patch up the hole for the upcoming stormy season. I treated him to nice meal of fabulous sandwiches for a job well done. We had:

  • FRIED PORK BELLY  $12: avocado, cumin carrots, kohlrabi, jalapeƱo, cilantro, scallions, fried garlic-chili mayo, acme torpedo roll.
  • CUMIN ENCRUSTED SEARED AHI TUNA $14:avocado, lollo rosso greens, spicy pickles, aguachile vinaigrette, acme deli roll
My mouth watered upon seeing Mr Sweetie's fried pork belly sammie although my ahi tuna was good. I was proud of myself for choosing something healthy but I will definitely get that pork belly next time. Mr Sweetie said that it was really good.
I loved the casual bistro-style ambiance. Value was also great. Each order came with potato chips. With an iced tea, tax and 20% tip, our final tab was $39. Not bad for a delicious afternoon date.
Colors of fall surround us as we went for another short stroll after eating. We  ended up getting cookies again from La Farine Patisserie next door, then went home to a cozy movie evening.
